Established in 1783, Greeneville is Tennessee's second oldest town. Greeneville showcases its history in brick sidewalks, historic sites, churches and homes against a backdrop of majestic mountains, and breathtaking waterways and streams spectacularly enhanced in panoramic color by four very definite seasons. Located in Greene County, one of the largest counties in the state, Greeneville, with a population of near 16,000, offers the lifestyle and amenities of much larger towns while maintaining a distinctive small-town ambiance. Greeneville was home to the 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson, and was the birthplace of celebrated hero Davy Crockett. The Town of Greeneville, under current Town leadership, combines a progressive approach to the future with a distinctive drive to promote and preserve its unique heritage.
Greeneville is home to many bases for large companies as well as small businesses. Corporations such as Walmart, John Deere, 3M, Forwardair, and American Greetings, among many others, have large production and regional offices in Greene County. Large locally owned companies such as TEVET Aerospace and Defense also call Greeneville home.
Greeneville offers its residents all the usual shopping necessities along with local merchants that sell products you won't find anywhere else. Outdoor activities are the name of the game in Greeneville and Greene County with countless hiking trials, waterways, parks, mountains, and more at your disposal.
Greeneville's historic downtown is being revitalized to create a destination unlike any other with places such as the General Morgan Inn, Catalyst Coffee, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, the soon to open Factory Adventure, and many more.
During my time in Greeneville, and especially while working as an intern at Town Hall in the Summer of 2023, I have heard things like “Greeneville should try to be like (insert town name here)” or “why can’t we have the same things as (insert city name here)”. My preference would be for us to set our own standard. We have something very special here that many small towns can only dream about. Greeneville is an absolute gem. Our location, scenery, and most importantly people are some of the best you will find anywhere in the world. Because of all of this, why can’t we set the standard and have other municipalities want to be like us? I believe the best things we can do moving forward are to work on continuing to redevelop our downtown, focus on developing affordable housing, and bringing more businesses/activities into our town that cater to a younger demographic. I truly believe that Greeneville has the potential to be the greatest Town in the State of Tennessee. It’s up to all of us to get it there.
